The hardest bug to get rid of in homes is widely considered to be the bed bug, with German cockroaches being a close second for indoor pests and termites being hardest for structural damage, but bed bugs are consistently ranked most difficult by pest control professionals. Bed bugs are hardest because they combine several survival advantages, they can survive up to 12 months without feeding on blood, they hide in extremely tiny cracks including mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, behind baseboards, and inside electrical outlets, they are nocturnal and feed at night causing itchy welts, they have developed strong resistance to common pyrethroid insecticides found in over-the-counter sprays, they spread easily through luggage, used furniture, and shared walls in apartments, and they cause significant psychological distress including anxiety, insomnia, and social stigma. Eradication requires intensive professional treatment including whole-home heat treatment raising temperatures to 135 to 145 degrees Fahrenheit for several hours to kill all life stages including eggs which are resistant to chemicals, plus encasing mattresses and box springs in bed bug-proof encasements, thorough vacuuming, washing bedding in hot water and drying on high heat, and often two to three chemical treatments with residual insecticides and growth regulators costing $1,000 to $3,000 for a whole home. German cockroaches are also extremely hard because one female can produce 30,000 offspring per year, they hide in kitchen cracks, and require gel baits and growth regulators over multiple visits. Overall bed bugs are hardest due to resistance and hiding ability.
