Despite being the gold standard for washing machine drums, stainless steel does have a few minor disadvantages, primarily centered around its higher initial manufacturing cost and susceptibility to specific cosmetic or chemical reactions under extreme conditions. Appliances built with high-grade stainless steel interior tubs typically carry a steeper price tag compared to basic porcelain-coated or plastic alternatives. Additionally, while stainless steel resists rust remarkably well, prolonged exposure to harsh chemical bleaches, highly acidic cleaning agents, or stagnant hard water minerals left sitting on the surface for extended periods can occasionally cause pitting, discoloration, or surface dullness if the drum is not periodically wiped down and cleaned properly.
