The difference between Cat 1 and 2 is size, capacity, and application in standardized systems, most commonly tractor hitch categories. Category 1 is for small compact utility tractors 20 to 45 horsepower, with lower link pins 7/8 inch diameter, top link pin 3/4 inch, spacing between lower arms about 26 inches, lift capacity up to 2000 pounds, used for light-duty 4 to 6 foot implements like rotary cutters, box blades, and tillers for hobby farms and landscaping. Category 2 is for larger utility tractors 40 to 100 horsepower, with bigger pins lower 1-1/8 inch, top 1 inch, spacing 32 inches, lift capacity 3000 to 5000 pounds, used for heavier 6 to 8 foot implements like heavy disc harrows and large mowers for mid-size farms. Physically, Cat 2 hitch arms are thicker and stronger with larger hydraulics. You can use Cat 1 implements on Cat 2 tractor with bushings that adapt smaller pins to larger holes, but not Cat 2 implements on Cat 1 tractor as they are too heavy and would overload hydraulics and cause instability. Cost difference, Cat 2 implements cost more. In other contexts, difference also applies, in aviation CAT I requires 200 feet decision height, CAT II requires 100 feet, CAT II is more precise. In triage, Cat 1 is immediate, Cat 2 is urgent within 10 minutes. But for tractors, Cat 2 is bigger and stronger than Cat 1.
