A door latch is defined as a mechanical fastening device used to hold a door, gate, or cabinet panel securely in a closed position without necessarily locking it with a key. It typically consists of a spring-loaded or sliding bolt mechanism that extends from the edge of the door into a recessed strike plate mounted on the doorframe. When the door is pushed closed, the bevel-ended bolt retracts automatically before snapping firmly into the strike plate opening to keep the door shut against wind, drafts, or accidental opening. Unlike a deadbolt lock operated by a key or thumb-turn, a latch is easily retracted via a doorknob, lever, or push paddle.
