The climate on Bouvet Island is severely subantarctic, characterized by low temperatures, persistent heavy cloud cover, frequent snowstorms, and relentless high-velocity winds. Temperatures rarely rise far above freezing, and the island is whipped by powerful maritime gales year-round, maintaining a heavy glacial covering across more than nine-tenths of its total land area.
