The best waterproof sealant for roof leaks depends on the location and type of leak, but for asphalt shingle roofs, asphalt-based roofing cement and polyurethane sealants are considered best by professionals. For small leaks around flashing, nail holes, and lifted shingle tabs, asphalt roofing cement, also called mastic or bull, is the industry standard. Products like Henry 208 Wet Patch, Black Jack, Karnak, and Geocel are widely used because they remain flexible, adhere well to asphalt shingles, and are compatible with shingle chemistry. They can be applied in wet conditions and seal small punctures effectively. For flashing details around chimneys, vents, skylights, and valleys where movement occurs, polyurethane sealants like Geocel 2300, OSI Quad, and Vulkem are excellent because they remain permanently flexible, adhere to multiple materials including metal and wood, and are UV resistant. Silicone sealants are generally not recommended for asphalt shingles as they do not bond well to asphalt and can prevent proper shingle sealing. For emergency temporary leaks, peel-and-stick repair tapes like EternaBond provide excellent waterproofing. The key is to use asphalt-compatible products, clean the surface, apply on dry conditions when possible, and ensure the underlying cause like damaged flashing or missing shingles is also repaired, as sealant alone over a large hole is not a permanent fix.
