The 4-second rule in New Zealand's official road code specifies the recommended minimum safe following distance you should maintain behind the vehicle directly ahead of you when driving under challenging conditions. While a 2-second interval is considered sufficient for normal, dry roads, you must double that gap to 4 seconds when traveling on wet, slippery, or unpaved roads, during heavy downpours or thick fog, or when towing a caravan or heavy trailer. To measure this distance accurately, pick a stationary roadside object and count seconds as the car ahead passes it; if you reach that object in under four seconds, you are following too closely.
