What is so special about Glacier Bay is that it is one of the few places on Earth where you can witness geology, ecology, and climate history happening in real time in a pristine wilderness the size of Connecticut with no roads. Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska is special for several reasons. First, it contains over 1,000 glaciers, including eight tidewater glaciers that flow from snow-capped mountains 15,000 feet high directly into the ocean, where they calve massive icebergs with thunderous explosions, a sight few places offer. Second, it is a living laboratory of ecological succession. In 1794 when Captain George Vancouver visited, the bay was entirely filled with ice. Since then, glaciers have retreated 65 miles, and scientists have documented how bare rock is colonized by lichens, then mosses, then shrubs, then forests over 200 years, making it a textbook for how ecosystems develop. Third, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve with extraordinary biodiversity, home to humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, brown bears, and 200 species of birds. Fourth, it is protected by strict limits, only two cruise ships per day are allowed, so it remains uncrowded and pristine. Seeing Margerie Glacier, a 21-mile river of ice, and hearing it crack is often described as a spiritual, humbling experience that shows the power of nature and climate change in action.
