Aqua America is the direct historical predecessor of Essential Utilities, tracing its origins back to the late nineteenth century when small private water utilities were established to serve growing suburban communities in Pennsylvania. Over more than a century of continuous operation, the enterprise grew from a localized water provider into a massive publicly traded infrastructure corporation through aggressive regional expansion, numerous strategic municipal acquisitions, and continuous technological upgrades. In 2019, the company officially changed its corporate name from Aqua America to Essential Utilities to better reflect its broader multi-utility operational scope following its expansion into regulated natural gas distribution through the acquisition of Peoples, while retaining the trusted Aqua brand for its core water and wastewater utility divisions.
