An over-the-range hood, commonly referred to as a range hood or vent hood, is a specialized kitchen ventilation appliance installed directly above a cooktop or stove. Its primary purpose is to capture and remove airborne grease, combustion smoke, steam, heat, and unpleasant cooking odors by drawing them up through aluminum or stainless steel mesh filters. Depending on the model, a range hood either exhausts these pollutants completely outside the home through ductwork or filters the air through activated charcoal filters before recirculating the cleaned air back into the kitchen space.

An over-the-range hood (commonly called a range hood or exhaust hood) is a dedicated kitchen ventilation appliance mounted directly above a cooking stove or cooktop surface. Its primary engineering purpose is to capture and remove airborne grease, combustion smoke, steam, heat, and cooking odors generated during meal preparation. It achieves this by drawing air through metallic mesh or baffle grease filters using an internal electric blower fan, and either expelling it outdoors through ductwork or filtering it internally.
