A zone is a defined area, region, or section that is set apart or distinguished from surrounding areas by specific boundaries, characteristics, rules, or purposes. The word comes from Greek zone meaning belt or girdle, implying a band that encircles or separates. In everyday use, a zone can be physical such as a school zone with reduced speed limits, a no-parking zone, a loading zone, a time zone where the same clock time is used, or a climate zone with similar temperature patterns. It can be regulatory such as a residential zone where only houses are allowed or an industrial zone for factories. It can be conceptual such as a comfort zone meaning a familiar psychological state where a person feels safe, or being in the zone meaning a state of peak focus and performance. As a verb, to zone means to divide into zones or designate for a specific use, and to zone out means to become distracted or lose focus. The core idea across all uses is boundedness and distinctiveness, a portion of space, time, or experience that has been delimited and given a specific identity or function that separates it from what is around it.
