In various informal, regional, or subcultural settings, several slang terms are used to refer to a floor. In hip-hop culture, street dance, and nightlife circles, the floor is frequently referred to simply as the dance floor or the turf. In construction trades and carpentry jargon, workers sometimes use shorthand terms like decking, subfloor, or hard deck. In naval and maritime terminology, sailors and ship personnel traditionally refer to floors and decks using nautical designations such as the deck, sole, or lower flat, depending on the exact compartment of the vessel.
