A homeline credit typically refers to a Home Equity Line of Credit, commonly abbreviated as a HELOC. It is a form of revolving credit that is secured by the equity accumulated in a person's residential property. Homeowners often utilize this financial product to fund significant expenses such as home renovations, educational tuition, debt consolidation, or major emergency costs. Unlike a traditional closed-end home equity loan that provides a single lump sum, a home line of credit functions similarly to a credit card. It features a designated draw period—frequently lasting five to ten years—during which the borrower can access funds up to a pre-approved credit limit as needed. Throughout this draw period, borrowers are typically required to make monthly payments covering only the interest accrued on the borrowed amount. Once the draw period concludes, the repayment phase begins, requiring the borrower to pay back both the principal balance and ongoing interest over a structured timeframe, which can extend up to twenty years. Interest rates on a homeline credit are usually variable, meaning they fluctuate in response to changes in benchmark interest rates like the prime rate, though some financial institutions offer fixed-rate options for specific portions of the balance.
