A batt is pre-cut piece of insulation, typically made of fiberglass, mineral wool, or cotton, manufactured as flat rectangular blanket that fits between studs, joists, and rafters in buildings for thermal and acoustic insulation. Batts are commonly used in residential construction to insulate exterior walls, attic floors, ceilings, and crawl spaces, providing R-value to resist heat flow. Batts come in standard widths to fit 16 inch or 24 inch framing, with kraft paper facing or unfaced, and various thicknesses. In textiles, batt is layer of fibrous batting used inside quilts, comforters, and sleeping bags for warmth. In military, batt is abbreviation for battalion. In sports, batt is short for batting. So most common meaning is insulation batt, which is blanket-like insulation that is easy to install DIY, inexpensive, and widely available, distinct from blown insulation which is loose fill, and from rigid foam boards. Proper installation requires fitting snugly without gaps or compression.
