When life insurance policy benefits remain unclaimed after an insured individual passes away and beneficiaries fail to come forward, insurance companies are legally required to conduct extensive search efforts to locate beneficiaries. If funds continue to remain dormant after a mandatory statutory timeframe specified by state or national regulations, the unclaimed insurance proceeds are eventually turned over to government unclaimed property divisions or state treasuries through a process called escheatment.
