What happens if you ignore a blister? If you ignore a small friction blister and continue same friction without protection, several things can happen. Small intact blister may still heal on its own as body reabsorbs fluid, even if ignored, especially if friction stops. However, continued pressure and rubbing can cause blister to enlarge, become more painful, and burst irregularly with torn roof, leaving raw open wound exposed to dirt and bacteria, increasing infection risk, pain, and healing time. Ignoring foot blister and walking long distances in wet socks can lead to deeper skin damage, blood blister, or secondary infection with spreading redness, pus, fever. For people with diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, or poor circulation, ignoring foot blister can be dangerous, leading to ulceration and serious infection. Ignoring blisters caused by burns, allergic reactions, or autoimmune disease may miss underlying condition needing treatment. So while small blister may resolve if left alone and protected, completely ignoring without cleaning, covering, or reducing friction raises risk of complications. Best is to clean gently, cover with bandage, reduce friction, monitor for infection signs, and seek care if not improving in 1 to 2 weeks.
