WD-40 can safely help dissolve and remove stubborn surface contaminants from automotive paint, such as sticky tree sap, tar spots, bug residue, and adhesive tape residue without stripping the underlying clearcoat. However, it is fundamentally a temporary cleaning lubricant rather than a paint protector. It should always be thoroughly washed off with automotive soap and water afterward to prevent leaving an oily residue that could interfere with future waxing or painting.
