A pilot light is a small, continuously burning gas flame in older heating appliances—such as water heaters, furnaces, boilers, and space heaters—that serves as an ignition source to light the main burner whenever the thermostat calls for heat. Fed by a small dedicated supply line, the tiny flame burns constantly to ensure that gas released by the main control valve ignites instantly and safely. Modern appliances have largely replaced standing pilot lights with electronic spark ignition or hot surface igniters to conserve energy and eliminate the need for a continuous gas flame.
