NHCover (formerly known as EQCover) stands for Natural Hazards Cover, which is New Zealand's government-backed natural disaster insurance scheme managed by the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake. Automatically included via a mandatory levy on all private residential home insurance policies, NHCover provides the first layer of statutory financial protection—up to specified statutory caps—for residential homes, outbuildings, and limited areas of surrounding land damaged by earthquakes, landslides, volcanic activity, tsunami, or natural floods.
