In contemporary youth culture, digital vernacular, and internet slang, the word moulding or molding is sometimes humorously or ironically used to describe periods of extreme inactivity, laziness, or lounging around the house for extended periods. When someone jokingly says they are moulding in bed or on the couch, they mean they have been lying still for so long without being productive that they feel like they are practically turning into furniture or losing their vitality. This slang usage plays on the literal definition of organic material sitting stagnant and developing mold or taking the shape of whatever container it rests in. Additionally, in certain subcultural online communities, the term can occasionally be used metaphorically to describe the mental stagnation or ideological shaping of an individual who spends excessive time consuming specific types of digital media or online content.
