What landslip means is ground movement where mass of soil, rock and debris slides down slope due to gravity, also called landslide or landslip, causing damage to land, buildings, roads and infrastructure. Landslip occurs when slope becomes unstable due to heavy rain saturating soil, erosion, earthquake, excavation at base of slope, or removal of vegetation that holds soil, causing shear strength to be exceeded. Types include rotational slip where curved surface slides, translational slip where flat surface slides, and mudslide where wet soil flows. In Australia, landslip is common in hilly areas like Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Dandenong Ranges and coastal cliffs, especially after heavy rain like 2022 floods causing many landslips. For insurance, landslip is often covered under home building insurance if sudden and not gradual, but many policies exclude landslip unless caused by insured event like storm, and require geotechnical report. Damage from landslip can be severe, with houses sliding down hill, roads blocked and retaining walls collapsing, costing $50K to $500K to repair, requiring retaining walls, drainage and soil nailing. Prevention includes proper drainage, retaining walls and not building on steep slopes. So landslip means sideways and downward movement of ground down slope due to gravity and water, distinct from subsidence which is downward sinking and heave which is upward swelling.
