A chimney is formally defined as an architectural ventilation structure constructed from masonry, stone, or insulated metal designed to safely isolate and exhaust toxic combustion gases, smoke, and hot air produced by an indoor fireplace, wood stove, boiler, or furnace up and away through the roof of a building. It relies on natural thermal buoyancy, known as draft, to pull fresh air into the firebox while safely expelling dangerous exhaust pollutants out into the exterior atmosphere, protecting indoor air quality.
