What rats hate the most and what gets rid of them is not a single smell or sound but the combination of exposure, lack of food, and physical barriers that remove everything they need to survive. As prey animals, rats hate being exposed in open, bright, noisy areas without cover, which is why they travel along walls and in dark hidden routes. They hate physical exclusion more than anything, specifically holes sealed with steel wool and caulk, metal hardware cloth, concrete, and door sweeps that block their entry, because without entry they cannot access warmth and food inside. They hate lack of food caused by airtight food storage in metal or glass containers, daily cleaning of crumbs and grease, securing trash in sealed bins, removing pet food at night, and cleaning up fallen fruit and bird seed, which forces them to take more risks and makes trapping more effective. They hate strong predator scents like cat and fox urine that trigger innate fear, though they habituate if no real predator appears. They hate sudden loud unpredictable noises that signal danger. While many products claim rats hate peppermint oil or ultrasonic sounds the most, those have only temporary effects. What they truly cannot tolerate is a home that is sealed, clean, uncluttered, and actively trapped with multiple rat-sized snap or electronic traps, because it removes shelter and food and creates learned avoidance.
