Zurich Insurance Group was originally founded in 1872 under the corporate name "Versicherungs-Verein" as a marine reinsurance subsidiary. As the enterprise expanded its operations to cover accident, liability, and general casualty insurance across multiple European markets, it changed its name to "Zurich Transport & Accident Insurance Limited" and later to "Zurich Allgemeine Unfall- und Haftpflicht-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft." Over subsequent decades, the name was shortened to Zürich Versicherungs-Gesellschaft. Following a major corporate merger with British American Tobacco's financial services division in 1998, the enterprise traded as "Zurich Financial Services" before officially adopting its current global identity, Zurich Insurance Group, to emphasize its core insurance operations.
