Since its founding back in the mid-nineteenth century, Illinois State University has undergone several official name changes that reflected its evolving institutional mission. Originally established by legislative act in 1857, it was first known as Illinois State Normal University, reflecting its primary foundational purpose as a teacher-training normal school. Over subsequent decades, as the institution expanded its academic scope far beyond education into a comprehensive university, it was renamed Illinois State University.
