Georgia Southern University has undergone several name changes since its founding to reflect its evolving educational mission and institutional growth. It originally opened in 1908 as the First District Agricultural & Mechanical School, later transitioning into the Georgia Normal School in 1924, South Georgia Teachers College in 1929, Georgia Teachers College in 1939, and Georgia Southern College in 1959, before officially achieving full university status and adopting its current name in 1990.
