Throughout its long institutional history leading up to its current designation, Colorado State University operated under several different names reflecting its foundational mission as an agricultural and mechanical college. Originally established in the nineteenth century, it was first known as the Agricultural College of Colorado. Later, the institution underwent a widely recognized identity shift to become Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical College, commonly abbreviated as Colorado A&M, before officially adopting its modern university title.
