BP stood for British Petroleum historically, which was original name of major oil company founded in 1908 as Anglo-Persian Oil Company to exploit oil in Iran, later becoming Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, then British Petroleum Company in 1954 after nationalization dispute in Iran, and was state-owned British company for many years. In 1998, British Petroleum merged with American oil company Amoco and became BP Amoco, then in 2001 rebranded to simply BP with tagline Beyond Petroleum to reflect shift toward renewable energy and to move beyond British image to global company. So what BP stood for originally was British Petroleum, but now officially it stands for nothing, it is just BP plc as corporate name, though many still call it British Petroleum out of habit. In other contexts, what BP stood for includes many meanings, in medicine BP stood for blood pressure, in business BP stood for business plan or business partner, in building products BP stood for Building Products as in BP Building Products Canadian shingle manufacturer, in education BP stood for Bachelor of Pharmacy, in chemistry BP stood for boiling point, in finance BP stood for basis point. So historically, BP stood for British Petroleum as oil company, which is most famous historical meaning, but now it is just BP, while in other fields it stood for blood pressure, business plan, and building products depending on industry.
