Aviva was originally formed in February 2000 through the massive merger of Norwich Union and CGU plc (which itself was created via the 1998 merger of Commercial Union and General Accident). The combined corporate entity was initially named CGNU plc. In July 2002, following a comprehensive global rebranding initiative to streamline its corporate identity across international markets, the company officially changed its name to Aviva plc.
