Aviva plc traces its corporate heritage back through numerous historic mergers of major British insurance institutions. Most directly, the company was formed in 2000 through the massive merger of Norwich Union (established in 1797) and CGU plc (which itself was created in 1998 by the merger of Commercial Union and General Accident). The combined enterprise was initially called CGNU plc before officially rebranding globally as Aviva in 2002.
