Siemens has bought many companies over its 175 plus year history, using acquisitions to build its technology portfolio, especially in software, automation, and healthcare. Some of its most significant acquisitions include Mentor Graphics in 2017 for 4.5 billion dollars, which became Siemens EDA and gave Siemens a leading position in chip design software, and Mendix in 2018 for 700 million dollars for low-code software development. In healthcare, Siemens acquired Varian Medical Systems in 2021 for 16.4 billion dollars, its largest ever acquisition, to become a leader in cancer care. In industrial software, it acquired UGS in 2007 for 3.5 billion dollars, which became the core of its product lifecycle management software, and more recently acquired Brightly for building software and Sqills for rail software. In automation, it acquired Dresser-Rand for energy equipment. In recent years, Siemens has focused on smaller bolt-on acquisitions to build its Xcelerator digital platform. Historically, Siemens also acquired many telecommunications and power businesses. Unlike Eaton or Schneider, Siemens has also divested many businesses, so its acquisition strategy has been about shifting from heavy industry to digital and software, spending tens of billions to become a leader in industrial software, medical technology, and smart infrastructure.
