When a residential washing machine refuses to start or turn on when you press the power and start buttons, the malfunction is typically caused by a blown electrical fuse, a tripped circuit breaker, a faulty door or lid latch switch, or a locked electronic control board. For safety reasons, top-load and front-load washers will not engage motor operations if the safety switch detects an open door or lid. You can troubleshoot electrical power and door switches easily using a multimeter. You can verify that your corrective action is successful when resetting the circuit breaker, securing a faulty lid switch, or performing a hard power reset allows the machine to power on and begin your selected wash cycle normally.
