A dry heave occurs when the body undergoes spasmodic, involuntary retching motions without actually expelling any stomach contents. This unpleasant physiological reaction is typically triggered by severe nausea, intense gastroenteritis, food poisoning, excessive alcohol consumption (hangovers), severe anxiety, motion sickness, intense coughing fits, or medication side effects that stimulate the vomiting center in the brain.
