A wide variety of everyday household substances and environmental conditions can easily be mistaken for the pungent rotten egg smell of a natural gas leak. Decaying organic food waste trapped inside a kitchen garbage disposal or plumbing drain, rotting potatoes or onions in a pantry, and sulfurous sewer gases rising from an unprimed, dry plumbing P-trap are frequent biological culprits. On the mechanical side, overheating plastic electrical wire insulation, a failing refrigerator compressor motor, or a burning appliance cord can emit sharp chemical odors easily mistaken for gas. Furthermore, sulfur-bearing well water, dead rodents trapped inside air ducts, and certain cleaning agents can produce distinct sulfurous scents that trigger false alarms.
