What are the two types of gel? Two types of gel can be classified in several ways. In chemistry, two main types are physical gels and chemical gels. Physical gels are formed by physical interactions like hydrogen bonding and entanglement, are reversible and can melt with temperature, such as gelatin dessert that melts when heated. Chemical gels are formed by covalent chemical cross-links, are irreversible and more stable, such as cured silicone gel. Another classification is hydrogels and organogels. Hydrogels are water-based gels where water is trapped in polymer network, like contact lenses, wound dressings, and aloe vera gel, while organogels have organic solvent trapped, used in cosmetics and drug delivery. In everyday use, two types could be hair gel for styling and shower gel for cleansing. In laboratory, two types are agarose gel and polyacrylamide gel for electrophoresis. So two types of gel are commonly physical versus chemical gels or hydrogels versus organogels depending on classification focus.
