A seized air conditioning compressor exhibits several distinct and noticeable symptoms that indicate the internal mechanical components have locked up and can no longer rotate. One of the most immediate signs is that the outdoor fan runs normally when the thermostat calls for cooling, but the compressor hums loudly for a few seconds before the system trips the circuit breaker or the thermal overload protector clicks off. Additionally, the copper lines connected to the outdoor unit will fail to feel cold or warm appropriately, and the cooling output inside the home drops to zero. If you check the electrical current draw with a clamp meter during startup, you will notice a massive spike in amperage known as a locked rotor amps condition before the protection trips.
