The main types of dampers span HVAC airflow control and vibration control engineering. In HVAC and industrial ventilation, main types include volume control dampers that regulate air quantity to balance systems, fire dampers that automatically close when high temperatures are detected to prevent fire spread through ducts, smoke dampers that block smoke movement, combination fire and smoke dampers, backdraft or non-return dampers that allow airflow in only one direction, butterfly dampers with a single disc, louver or multi-blade dampers with parallel or opposed blades, and flue or chimney dampers that control draft in fireplaces. In vibration and shock control, main types include viscous fluid dampers that use oil or silicone fluid, hydraulic dampers, friction dampers that dissipate energy through sliding friction, tuned mass dampers that use a large mass and spring to counteract building motion, elastomeric dampers using rubber, and electromagnetic or eddy current dampers. In automotive suspension, there are monotube and twin-tube dampers. In acoustics, there are sound dampers. Each type is designed to convert kinetic or flow energy into heat or to block flow for safety and comfort.
