Common problems with Goodman air conditioners are similar to other brands and are often related to installation quality and maintenance rather than inherent design flaws, though some issues are more frequently reported. One common problem is refrigerant leaks, particularly at brazed joints or evaporator coils, which can occur if the unit was not properly pressure tested during installation or if the coil develops pinhole leaks over time. Another common issue is capacitor failure, the start capacitor and dual run capacitor that help start the compressor and fan motor are wear items that can fail every 3 to 7 years in hot climates, causing the unit not to start or to hum. Fan motor failure and contactor failure are also common wear items. Some older Goodman models had issues with evaporator coil leaks due to formicary corrosion, though Daikin has improved coil coatings in recent years. Electrical issues like short cycling can occur if the unit is oversized or has a faulty thermostat. Poor installation is the biggest cause of problems, as Goodman is sold broadly and some installers do not properly evacuate, charge, or size the system, leading to low efficiency, frozen coils, and compressor stress. Regular maintenance such as annual coil cleaning, filter changes, and checking refrigerant charge can prevent most problems. Overall, Goodman problems are not significantly more frequent than other brands when properly installed.
