Yes, there was a major recall on Lennox Pulse furnaces that is one of the largest furnace recalls in US history, affecting furnaces manufactured from 1982 to 1989. Lennox Pulse was innovative pulse combustion furnace with 90 percent AFUE that used spark plug-like ignition that created pulses, model numbers include G14 and GSR14 Series Pulse furnaces. Recall was issued by Lennox and CPSC due to gas leaks and heat exchanger cracks that could cause carbon monoxide poisoning, fire, and explosion hazards, with over 1.6 million units affected. Problem was pulse combustion caused metal fatigue in heat exchanger that cracked after 5 to 10 years, allowing carbon monoxide and gas to leak into home, with many incidents of CO poisoning and at least one death reported. Lennox offered free inspection and free replacement heat exchanger or free new furnace replacement program in 1990s, but many units still remain in homes. CPSC recommends all Lennox Pulse furnaces be inspected and replaced immediately as they are now 35 to 43 years old and well beyond safe lifespan. If you have Lennox Pulse furnace, check model number on rating plate inside burner compartment, if it says Pulse, turn off furnace, open windows, and call Lennox at 1-800-453-6669 and licensed HVAC contractor immediately for free inspection, as it is safety hazard. Do not continue using Pulse furnace, as parts unavailable and dangerous. Modern Lennox furnaces like SLP99V are completely different design and not affected.
