Soaking certain vegetable seeds in lukewarm water for 12 to 24 hours before planting can be beneficial, particularly for large, hard-coated seeds like peas, beans, squash, corn, and nasturtiums. This pre-soaking process softens the tough outer seed coat, accelerates moisture absorption, and jumpstarts internal germination biochemistry, allowing seedlings to sprout much faster once sown in the soil. However, tiny seeds like lettuce or carrots should never be soaked because they become sticky and difficult to handle.
