If your house smells like rotten eggs but you have verified there is no gas leak, the odor is typically caused by hydrogen sulfide gas from your water heater or dried-out plumbing P-traps. Sulfur bacteria reacting with a magnesium anode rod in the water heater produces a distinct rotten egg smell in hot water. Alternatively, if floor drains, sinks, or showers have not been used recently, water in the drain P-traps evaporates, allowing foul sewer gases to drift up into your living spaces. Verification: Run water down all unused drains and check hot water taps for sulfur odors.
