Most modern digital, programmable, and smart residential thermostats do not feature a physical external "reset button" that you can simply press. However, many digital thermostats include a software reset option located within the on-screen settings menu, or a master hardware reset procedure that involves removing the thermostat faceplate from the wall mount, taking out the batteries, and reinserting them backward for a few seconds to clear internal memory and reboot the device. For older mechanical thermostats with mercury vials, there is no reset button at all. If your HVAC system is locked out due to a safety fault, resetting the equipment requires cycling the main circuit breakers at your electrical panel. You can verify a successful thermostat reboot when the display screen powers back on and responds to your programming.
