Yes, there have been recalls on Rheem water heaters, most notable recall in 2018 for Rheem, Ruud, and Richmond electric water heaters manufactured from 2017 to 2018 due to faulty thermostat that could cause overheating and fire hazard, affecting about 30,000 units. CPSC recall notice said upper thermostat could fail to shut off heating element causing water to overheat to 200 degrees, pressure relief valve to open, and potential scalding and fire risk, with Rheem offering free inspection and free thermostat replacement by technician. Another recall in 2005 for Rheem gas water heaters due to gas valve issue causing gas leak. For tankless water heaters, Rheem recalled some RTG models in 2015 due to carbon monoxide hazard from improper venting kit. For HVAC, Rheem has not had major recall like Lennox Pulse furnaces, but had voluntary service bulletin for evaporator coil leaks. To check if your Rheem water heater recalled, look at model and serial number on rating plate, usually 10-digit serial where first 4 digits indicate manufacture date, and visit CPSC.gov or Rheem.com/recall and enter serial number, or call Rheem at 1-866-369-4786. If affected, stop using and call for free repair. Most Rheem water heaters from 2019 onward not affected. Always ensure pressure relief valve working and temperature set to 120 degrees to prevent overheating.
