Step flashing is generally not reusable and should be replaced whenever surrounding shingles are replaced or when it shows any signs of damage, rust, or improper installation. Step flashing consists of small L-shaped metal pieces that are interwoven with shingle courses along sidewalls and chimneys to create a watertight barrier. When shingles are removed during roof replacement or repair, step flashing is typically bent, deformed, or damaged during removal, and its sealant is aged, making it unable to form a proper watertight seal if reused. Even if it appears intact, old step flashing may have hidden corrosion, pinholes, or fatigue cracks that will cause leaks. Reusing old step flashing is considered poor workmanship and a common source of future leaks on new roofs, and it may void manufacturer warranties that require new flashing for full coverage. Professional roofing standards and manufacturer installation instructions from GAF, Owens Corning, and others require new step flashing for warranty compliance. The cost of new step flashing is relatively small compared to the cost of repairing interior damage from leaks caused by reused flashing. When replacing a roof, always insist that the contract includes new step flashing made from quality materials like galvanized steel, aluminum, or copper, properly integrated with new shingles. For repairs, if surrounding shingles are removed, replace the step flashing in that area rather than attempting to reuse it.
