Remediation and repair are related but not exactly the same, remediation is generally more comprehensive than repair. Repair typically means fixing something that is broken to make it functional again, such as repairing a leaky pipe or patching drywall. Remediation includes repair but also involves addressing root cause, cleaning up contamination or damage resulting from the problem, and restoring conditions to a safe or compliant state with verification. For example, repairing a roof leak stops water entry, but mold remediation after the leak includes containing mold, removing contaminated materials, disinfecting, drying, and ensuring air quality returns to safe levels. In environmental contexts, remediation involves cleaning up pollution, not just repairing equipment. In education, remediation means providing additional instruction to address learning gaps, not just repairing a test score. Repair can be part of remediation, but remediation adds assessment, cleanup, restoration, and prevention. So while all remediation includes some repair, not all repairs qualify as remediation because remediation emphasizes thoroughness, safety, and long-term prevention of recurrence.
