It is generally not bad to sleep right next to an air purifier, and for many people it is beneficial, but there are a few considerations to make it safe and effective. Sleeping next to a True HEPA air purifier can improve sleep quality by reducing allergens like dust mites, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores that trigger nighttime congestion and asthma, and by providing white noise that helps some people sleep. The main concerns are noise, draft, and ozone. If the purifier is too loud on high speed, it can disturb sleep, so use sleep or low mode at night which is usually under 50 decibels. A strong draft blowing directly on your face all night can cause dry eyes, dry throat, or stiff neck, so position the purifier so airflow is not directly on your face, about 3 to 6 feet away is ideal. Most importantly, avoid purifiers that produce ozone, such as ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, or ozone generators, because ozone irritates lungs, worsens asthma, and is not safe to breathe in a closed bedroom all night. Choose a unit certified by the California Air Resources Board to produce less than 0.05 ppm ozone. True HEPA units without ionizers are safest for bedside use. Also keep the purifier on a stable surface and clean the filter regularly to prevent mold buildup inside the unit.
