Traditional commercial insurance contracts are frequently debated by Islamic scholars due to elements of uncertainty (Gharar), gambling (Maisir), and interest (Riba). However, cooperative, Shariah-compliant alternatives known as Takaful—such as motor and vehicle Takaful offered by Islamic insurance providers—are widely accepted as halal. Takaful operates on the principle of mutual shared responsibility, cooperative risk-pooling, and donated contributions (Tabarru), where participants assist one another during losses rather than engaging in speculative commercial risk transactions.
