Canadian provincial health insurance plans (such as OHIP or MSP) provide very minimal, highly restricted emergency medical coverage when a Canadian travels to the United States. Provincial plans reimburse only a tiny fraction of actual U.S. hospital billing rates—often capping payouts at paltry daily maximums that fall catastrophically short of American medical costs. Consequently, Canadian provincial health insurance is functionally inadequate in the U.S., requiring Canadians to purchase private cross-border travel medical insurance before heading south.
