Banco Popular de Puerto Rico is completely independent of Banco Santander and is not part of the Spanish banking group. While a separate European financial institution historically known as Banco Popular Español was acquired and absorbed by Banco Santander during a mandatory regulatory resolution in Spain, that corporate transaction had no structural or operational connection to the distinct American and Puerto Rican banking operations of Popular, Inc.
