To sweat (solder) a copper pipe joint, first shut off the water supply, drain the line completely, and clean the pipe end and fitting socket with sandpaper or a wire brush until bright. Apply a thin layer of water-soluble plumbing flux to both surfaces, assemble the joint, and heat the fitting uniformly with a propane or MAPP gas torch. Once the flux bubbles and the metal reaches soldering temperature, touch the lead-free solder wire to the joint gap; capillary action will draw the molten solder smoothly all around. Verification: Allow the joint to cool naturally and test with water pressure.
